Only 60km south east of Adelaide, Langhorne Creek is one of Australia's fastest growing and largest grape producing wine regions in South Australia. Langhorne Creek produces more grapes than McLaren Vale, Coonawarra and the Clare Valley.

Grapes sourced from the rich alluvial soils of Langhorne Creek have always been mainstays of Wolf Blass red wines. The fruit from this region produces elegant wines, displaying a distinct mint/eucalypt character that typifies the region.

Vineyard Key Milestones

In 1883 William Formby bought land, planted Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1892 and called his vineyard Metala. Many of these vines are still in use today and form the backbone of the internationally popular Metala label.

Frank Potts is credited with designing one of Australia's first irrigation schemes.

In the late 1960s Wolf Blass commenced making his owned red blends by using Langhorne Creek fruit as his essential building block.

In 1974 Wolf Blass wins the first of three consecutive Jimmy Watson trophies with a Cabernet Sauvignon sourced entirely from Langhorne Creek. This wine becomes the first ever Wolf Blass Black Label.

Today the region's red fruit continues to attract immense interest, with the Cabernet Sauvignon typically minty and rich. Langhorne Creek still provides all the Cabernet Sauvignon fruit for the Wolf Blass Grey Label and much of the fruit for the Wolf Blass President's Selection Cabernet Sauvignon.
