St Huberts

The history of St Huberts is rich and colourful. It began in 1862, when Hubert de Castella, a young Swiss émigré, arrived in Australia bent on pursuing riches.

By 1863 he had taken up viticulture in the Yarra Valley. He named his vineyard after St Hubert, patron saint of hunting.

Hubert de Castella’s early successes were extraordinary. At the 1880 Universal Exhibition of Melbourne, the Emperor of Germany offered a prize for ‘the Australian exhibitor whose artistic and industrial progress is best displayed by the outstanding qualities of his product’. St Huberts won.

St Huberts ChardonnayWorld acclaim once more went to St Huberts in 1889, when the winery won one of only 14 Grand Prix awards at the Paris exposition. A phenomenal result for a young winery from the other end of the earth.

After some changing fortunes, revival came in the 1960s when replanting began in the Yarra Valley.

Today the region is the most renowned in the country, producing world class Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. And St Huberts remains at the forefront.

Some things never change.
