For over 140 years, Saltram Winery has been one of the oldest and proudest in Australia. Its Barossa Valley origins go back to 1844, when the Saltram family built the magnificent Mamre Brook house. Wine was first made at Saltram in 1849, and Mamre Brook remains the spiritual home of the Saltram Estate, and the basis for a proud tradition and rich heritage.
The first vintage on the site of the current winery, at Angaston, was 8000L of 1862 Dry Red.
In 1992 Nigel Dolan, son of the legendary Bryan Dolan, returned to the place of his birth and assumed the role of senior winemaker. The subsequent eight years have enhanced his stature as a Barossa great.
Nigels reds from the 1996 vintage were among the best made in Australia: the 1996 No. 1 Shiraz and the 1996 Mamre Brook Cabernet Sauvignon won eight trophies and 12 gold medals at wine shows across Australia.
In its 140 years of great winemaking Saltram has been incredibly well served by a succession of fine winemakers.
Now, with the support of Mildara Blass, who have owned the winery since 1996, Nigel Dolan has paid increasing attention to the Saltram Classics and Metala range.
